Last week’s Big Question asked who would win if/when Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua meet for the undisputed heavyweight championship, or meet without any belts, whatever, who cares? Who wins the fight? Earlier in 2020 we’d run basically the same poll and got some hilarious ballot stuffing for AJ, but this time the choice was clear: 77 percent voted for Tyson Fury to win.
This week we turn our attention to a pair of rivals who have met before, twice in fact, and might again in 2021. Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin both won over the weekend, with GGG dominating Kamil Szeremeta on Friday, and Canelo outclassing Callum Smith on Saturday.
We’ve already talked about what’s next for Canelo and GGG, and even ahead of their fights we talked about a potential third meeting between the two.
The 30-year-old Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KO) and 38-year-old Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO) are at different points of their careers for sure. Alvarez now has two title belts at 168 and intends to stay there, looking to further and fully unify in time. Golovkin has the IBF belt at 160 and has been resistant to moving up in weight over the years, and it’s kind of incredible he still so easily makes the middleweight limit.
Canelo has the leverage and could get GGG up to 168, or at least a 164/165 catchweight, probably. And we know DAZN want the fight and have wanted it since signing Golovkin to the six-fight deal he’s now three fights into. They no longer have Canelo under contract, of course, but he’s obviously open to working with them, and with Golovkin’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
So this one’s real simple: do you want to see Canelo-GGG 3 next? Should Canelo forego, say, a fight with IBF titleholder Caleb Plant or WBO titleholder Billy Joe Saunders to go back to the GGG rivalry, where many feel there is still unfinished business from their 2017 and 2018 fights? Or should Canelo move on, has the time for the third bout come and gone now? Is GGG no longer enough of a threat to you? Or any other reason?
YOU make the call!
