Mexican puncher Miguel Berchelt, who holds the super featherweight championship of the World Boxing Council, made it clear that he fully intends to chin-check his compatriot Oscar Valdez, when they collide in the ring on the working date of February 20.
“I have the advantage that I am at my natural weight, he is coming up and his jaw is damaged. That is a point in my favor; I will go to put my finger on the sore, to finish it off with his jaw,” Berchelt told EFE.
Valdez suffered a badly broken jaw several years ago, in a tough war with Scott Quigg.
Berchelt, with 37 wins, 33 by knockout, and one loss, explained that although he will arrive in good shape to defend his belt against Valdez, the fight will be tough.
“There are two Mexicans in the ring, which means the show is guaranteed; everyone knows my explosive style; if I can hurt Oscar and I can put a good hand on him, I will look for the knockout,” Berchelt said.
The fight between Berchelt and Valdez, with an unbeaten record of 26 wins and 21 of those by knockout, is one of the most anticipated because it involves two fighters with a lot of tools.
“It will be an important fight, I would like to win in a resounding way to be considered among the best pound for pound in boxing, but that is decided by the people in charge of it. I dedicate myself to doing my job, to pursue the win,” Berchelt added.
Bertchelt recovered from COVID-19 and although he initially suffered from exhaustion, he is ready to complete heavy training in the next six weeks.
“I started from less to more and I will get to February 20 in good form, I am focused, training myself and that it is the best medicine,” Berchelt commented.
In 2020 he fought only once and is confident that 2021 will be one of the best periods of his life, with a victory over Valdez and at least two more fights.
Regarding his future, the boxer confessed that he would love to win all the super featherweight belts, but he is not closed off to moving up to the lightweight category, if there are fights for better purses.
“I would like to break the record of Julio César Chávez with nine defenses at super featherweight, and if not I’ll go to lightweight against Teofimo Lopez, Davis Haney, or someone else. It would be a question of us talking about the purse,” Berchelt said.
