Reynoso on Ryan Garcia: Nobody Will Underestimate Him Again

Boxing Scene

Two weeks ago, Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) made a big statement when he knocked out 2012 Olympic gold medal winner Luke Campbell to capture the WBC interim-lightweight championship in Texas.

Garcia was decked hard by Campbell in the second round and managed to weather the storm.

In the fifth, Garcia had Campbell in serious trouble at the bell.

During the seventh, he closed the show with a big shot to the liver to send Campbell down for the full count.

The 22-year-old Garcia is trained by Eddy Reynoso, who is best known for his work with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Canelo is very supportive of Garcia’s career and personally attended his last fight.

Reynoso expects Garcia to only get better as time goes on.

“The way Ryan reacted, after he was dropped, really surprised me. It showed that Ryan has big balls and a lot of qualities,” Reynoso told The Sun.

“The Ryan Garcia that I knew before that fight, I knew was very disciplined and very talented but you only see the capabilities and capacities of a fighter when they are in a crash situation, that is when you see the true character of a fighter.

“The best champions in the world, in history, are the ones who have done it in crash situations, when they have been knocked down or hurt and got up to win. That is what we saw with Ryan Garcia and it made us very proud. Before the Luke Campbell fight people were underestimating Ryan so after showing what he did,  I don’t think anyone ever will again.

“He is only 22-years-old and he is learning a lot This is a division with fighters like Gervonta Davis, Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney and they are all around Ryan’s age. He would fight anyone of them and I welcome them and will prepare Ryan for them like never before. There are still things that we need to review, there are things that we need to improve but a kid with the power Ryan has will never rule himself out of a fight because, with that sort of power, he can beat anyone.”
