Dirrell to face Davis in Feb. 27 FOX main event against Canelo card

Fighting

Former two-time super middleweight titleholder Anthony Dirrell will return to the ring on Saturday, Feb. 27, headlining a PBC on FOX show that almost nobody will be paying attention to, as it is set to go head-to-head with Canelo Alvarez’s return on DAZN.

There was some talk of the 36-year-old Dirrell (33-2-1, 24 KO) possibly hanging up the gloves following his loss to David Benavidez in Sept. 2019, which is the last time we saw the veteran in action, but he’ll face Kyrone Davis in what really amounts to a rust-shaker or tune-up bout on paper.

Davis (15-2, 6 KO) is a 26-year-old middleweight with losses to Junior Castillo in 2016 and Patrick Day in 2018, and otherwise hasn’t faced many notable opponents. He did win a split decision over Marcos Hernandez in 2017, handing Hernandez his first loss. If you want a rough idea of Davis’ level on paper, BoxRec have him ranked No. 80 in the world at 160 pounds. He has won his last two, a pair of club-level fights in Minneapolis and Philadelphia.

In all candor, this is not a fight that would draw much attention even if it were running solo that night, but it will be totally drowned out by the Canelo card.

Brian Kenny also mentioned on tonight’s FOX broadcast that we’ll also see the return of unbeaten Jesus Ramos (14-0, 13 KO), a 19-year-old 140/147 prospect who has been featured on several PBC cards now and has passed every test very nicely.
