Hearn: There’s No Debate, Canelo is Pound-For-Pound No. 1

Boxing Scene

Eddie Hearn, who is currently working with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez under a two-fight deal, says there is no debating the Mexican star’s position as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

This past Saturday night at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Canelo dominated and stopped mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim in three one-sided rounds.

Back in December, Canelo dominated unbeaten Callum Smith over twelve rounds to capture the WBC, WBA super middleweight titles.

His next fight is already scheduled, with a three belt unification clash with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders taking place on May 8th.

Canelo has captured world titles at junior middleweight, middleweight super middleweight and light heavyweight.

There are many observes who view him as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but there are others who give the same position to WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford.

The pound-for-pound picture became clearer in 2020, when Teofimo Lopez pulled off an upset twelve round unanimous decision over Vasiliy Lomachenko to capture the unified junior welterweight crown. At the time of that fight, there were many experts who had Lomachenko listed as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.

“There’s no debate that Canelo Alvarez is the pound-for-pound number one and he continues to fight the best,” said Hearn.

“I’ve been around the sport for 34 years and I do feel like a fan-boy around Canelo Alvarez because he’s the best fighter I’ve ever seen up close.”

“Anthony Joshua will always be my No 1, but AJ looks at Canelo Alvarez and said this guy is the pound-for-pound number one.”
