Carlos Takam Aims For Big Fight, Willing To Face UK’s Best

Heavyweight contender Carlos Takam is looking for the biggest fight possible, according to his promoter Joe DeGuardia.

Last year, Takam was hoping to become the opponent for WBC world champion Tyson Fury – for a planned voluntary defense in December.

The fight never happened when Fury canceled his plan to make a year-end ring return.

Takam’s last fight took place in July 2020, when he picked up a unanimous decision victory over Jerry Forrest, who last month fought to a draw with undefeated Chinese Olympian Zhilei Zhang.

Takam has been rebuilding his career after suffering back to back stoppage losses in tough fights with Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora.

He’s built up a streak of four victories.

With Fury and Joshua on the verge on finalizing a deal to face each other in the coming months, Takam’s handlers want to secure him the best available opportunity.

“We are working on various possibilities for Carlos. To answer your question, yes we would certainly entertain fighting any of Britain’s top heavyweights. Carlos wants the best fighters out there,” said Takam’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia, to Sky Sports.

DeGuardia explains that a deal to face Fury was nearly finalized – but then his team received the unexpected notice that Fury was not going to fight again until 2021.

He says Takam was confident in his ability to pull off an upset in that potential fight.

“He [Takam] was 100 percent confident,” said DeGuardia.

“He clearly thought that he was going to win. He was training very hard and was very much looking forward to the fight. I think we were at I would say 98 percent done [in negotiations] and then it just changed in one day.”
