WBC Prez: Estrada-Chocolatito Could Have Been a Draw, Gone Either Way

Boxing Scene

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman offered heavy praise for the super flyweight unification rematch from last Saturday night, between Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

Estrada came away with a twelve round split decision victory.

In the aftermath, there was a lot of controversy over the outcome.

The scores were 115-113 for Estrada, 115-113 for Gonzalez – and 117-111 for Estrada.

The scorecard of 117-111 created enough controversy to force the WBA to temporarily suspend the judge in question.

Pursuant to a WBC order, Estrada must now face the mandatory challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand.

But a tremendous amount of the boxing public are calling for a trilogy fight between Estrada and Chocolatito.

Sor Rungvisai is not willing to walk away from his mandated trilogy fight with Estrada. He’s been waiting for his shot and rejected the scenario of a step-aside agreement.

Sulaiman felt the Estrada vs. Chocolatito rematch could have went either way – and could have been a draw.

“It was a historic fight between Estrada and Chocolatito, a fight that could have been a draw or won by either of them,” Sulaiman told Jose Luis Camarillo.

“It was a fight that goes beyond the judging, goes beyond the outcome, it was a classic fight, an epic fight, which places everything in favor of world boxing, of Latin boxing.”

Sulaiman is very pleased with entire Super Fly series, which saw numerous classic fights between the top boxers in the weight class.

“It is a job as a promoter that began several years ago, when the Super Fly concept began. There are already 10 fights between Carlos Cuadras, Chocolatito, Rungvisai and Estrada, and there is much more ahead,” Sulaiman said.
