Boxing Scene

Rene Giron (16-1, 10 KOs) of Queretaro, Mexico is on the rise. The newest member of the L.A. based Espinoza Boxing Club first made a huge splash when he stopped the highly touted 2016 American Olympian Carlos Balderas. The sixth round stoppage was on the Tony Harrison-Jermell Charlo undercard in December 2019.

Manager Frank Espinoza for his part, has referred to Giron as a “diamond in the rough”.

BoxingScene.com caught up with the 22 year old super lightweight prospect and spoke to him about his KO win over the tough Guadalupe Acosta in Tijuana in November 2020. The win was recently featured on global sports streaming Best in Boxing.

How did you rate your last performance against Acosta?

I would give myself a seven. I have a lot to improve upon. I’m still young and I have a lot to learn still. I’m working on my defense and my foot work and my goal is to one day be a complete fighter.

What are your goals in the sport of boxing?

I want to work my way up to a title shot. I have to prove myself with the fans and I have to get some important victories but with god’s help and a lot of work, I plan to make this a reality. I want to be a champion badly.

How did you end up being part of the Espinoza Boxing Club?

Frank Espinoza was impressed with my victory over Carlos Balderas who is a skilled opponent and very highly regarded. After I stopped him in the sixth round, I got a call from Frank saying he was interested in managing me. I feel very blessed to be part of such a distinguished team.

Who are some of the boxers that you admire and why?

I’m a huge fan of Salvador Sanchez. I watch a lot of his YouTube videos. He was an amazing fighter. I’m also a fan of fighters like Mike Tyson and Marvin Hagler. I like watching all the old fights from the past. I especially like fights with Julio Cesar Chavez and Ruben Olivares.

Some people say that you remind them of Israel Vazquez. What do you think of that comparison?

I’m definitely as courageous as Israel Vazquez. It’s one of the reasons they call me ”El Beavo”.  He was a great fighter to watch. I always enjoyed his fights. His fight against Rafael Marquez were legendary. I can definitely see some of Israel Vazquez in the way I fight. But at this point, I’m focusing on becoming more defensive minded.

What’s it going to take to become a world champion?

It’s going to take a lot of discipline and focus. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and faith in myself. And it’s going to take a great team. My trainer Carlos Barragan is really pushing me and I’m happy to be working with him and my manager Frank Espinoza is one of the best in the industry. So as long as I put in the work, I expect to go far.

What message would you give it to the fans out there who are starting to hear about you?

I want them to know that I have a lot of respect for the fans. I have a dream and the dream is to be a champion in several divisions and I want to be recognized as a great fighter. I want to be a fighter that everyone remembers and talks about. I want to let the fans know I plan to provide them with a lot of excitement in the future. Keep following me. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Manager Espinoza agrees – “We have some exciting plans coming up for El Bravo. His style is fan friendly and I guarantee you he’ll be involved in some classic fights. Rene is just getting started. I predict his future will be very bright.”
