Julio Cesar Martinez in Training, Waits For New Date For Arroyo Defense

Boxing Scene

Mexican boxer Julio Cesar ‘Rey’ Martínez returned to the gym this week to start preparing for his next defense of the World Boxing Council junior flyweight championship after suffering an injury last month.

According to ESPN Deportes, Martinez has set his sights on rescheduling the postponed fight against the interim-champion of the WBC, Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo.

Martinez was scheduled to fight last month, on February 27, as part of the undercard to Canelo Alvarez’s big win over Avni Yildirim, which took place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

A few days before the fight, it was revealed that Martinez sustained an injury to his right hand and he withdrew from the bout.

Arroyo would instead face late-replacement Abraham ‘Choco’ Rodriguez for the interim-championship of the division, with Martinez needing to face the winner.

In what became a one-sided contest, the Puerto Rican fighter pounded on Rodriguez for a TKO win.

Mauricio Aceves, trainer of Martinez, has mentioned that he has been training the champion without any setbacks in camp. He says Martinez would love the opportunity to fight on the undercard of Canelo’s upcoming three belt unification with Billy Joe Saunders, which takes place on May 8th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. However, it has not yet been confirmed if Martinez will be able to take part in that big event.
