AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas – In a unification showdown for the WBC, WBO, WBA super middleweight titles, a crowd of over 73,000 saw Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) stop Billy Joe Saunders (30-1, 14 KOs) in eight rounds.
Saunders was moving and boxing well in the eight. Canelo would then hurt Saunders with a punch that damaged his right eye. After that shot landed, Saunders was quickly in survival mode as Canelo took over with big punches for the rest of the round.
The fight was stopped before the start of the ninth, as there seemed to be a big problem with Saunders’ eye and he was unable to come out for the ninth.
