As former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder readies himself for this third fight against Tyson Fury on July 24, Wilder has elevated Malik Scott into a leading role in his training camp. Since Wilder’s stoppage loss to Fury in their second meeting Wilder unceremoniously parted ways with trainer Mark Breland, and while Jay Deas remains apart of the Wilder’s camp, it’s former opponent and longtime training partner Malik Scott who is now leading the charge.
“Malik is my true brother. Even before me and Malik fought, we were very close,” said Wilder. “Throughout our careers we have always talked. I always wanted to bring him in because of his genius and his mindset as a fighter. He’s a genius in his mind, he knows what to do, but he just didn’t have the athletic body to be able to perform what’s in his head.”
Wilder would continue by saying that he has the athleticism to enact Scott’s strategy, and he plans on doing exactly that to claim redemption over Fury. Scott says he believes chemistry is just as important between a fighter and trainer as any actual teachings and he and Wilder have plenty of that after having spending so many training camps together.
In fact, to let Scott tell it, it’s going to be a bad night for Tyson Fury next month and Wilder couldn’t be any more comfortable than having a familiar friendly face leading the way. We’ll see exactly what game plan Scott comes up with and how well Wilder will be able to execute next month when the first bell rings!
