To be clear here, the WBA still ridiculously recognize Leo Santa Cruz as their “super world champion” at featherweight, but Santa Cruz hasn’t fought in that division since Feb. 2019, moving up to 130 to win their “super world title” at 130 lbs in Nov. 2019, which he then lost to Gervonta Davis in Oct. 2020. The most likely reason for this is that Santa Cruz carries more name value than Xu Can does, and if Leo decides he wants to return to 126 lbs, the WBA would probably rather have him as their top titleholder for the bigger sanctioning fees and all that.

The card will also feature Tommy McCarthy and Chris Billam-Smith fighting for three belts at cruiserweights, with McCarthy’s European title, Billam-Smith’s Commonwealth title, and the vacant British title all on the line, plus we’ll see a return for Anthony Fowler against Rico Mueller, Avni Yildirim taking on Jack Cullen, and Campbell Hatton getting a main card slot while we’re urged not to judge him too harshly.

Main Card (DAZN, 2:00 pm ET)

  • Xu Can (18-2, 3 KO) vs Leigh Wood (24-2, 14 KO), featherweights, 12 rounds
  • Tommy McCarthy (18-2, 9 KO) vs Chris Billam-Smith (12-1, 10 KO), cruiserweights, 12 rounds
  • Campbell Hatton (2-0, 0 KO) vs Jakub Laskowski (4-4-1, 2 KO), lightweights, 4 rounds
  • Anthony Fowler (14-1, 11 KO) vs Rico Mueller (28-3-1, 19 KO), junior middleweights, 10 rounds
  • Avni Yildirim (21-3, 12 KO) vs Jack Cullen (19-2-1, 9 KO), super middleweights, 10 rounds
