UPDATE (4:46 pm ET): Canelo Alvarez has posted on Instagram that the fight is set for November 6. — Scott
Looks like they weren’t kidding when they said a deal was “close.” ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reports that Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant have “agreed to terms for a November pay-per-view fight.”
No details yet as to location or pricing, only that PBC will present the event alongside Canelo Promotions.
Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO) defeated Callum Smith for the WBC and WBA “super” belts last December, then added the WBO title to his collection last May with an impressive stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders. Plant (21-0, 12 KO) handily outclassed Jose Uzcategui for the IBF belt in 2019 and has since defended it three times, most recently shutting out Caleb Truax in January. Barring another of 2021’s endless boxing debacles, whoever wins this will become the first undisputed super middleweight champion of the four-belt era.
Considering this matchup’s history, I’d hold off on getting too excited, but it does look like they’ve reached a milestone they failed to accomplish the first time around.
