Six division world champion Oscar De La Hoya, 48-years-old, has left the hospital after being treated for COVID-19.
The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions had been training for a comeback fight against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, which was scheduled to headline a pay-per-view event being staged by the Triller app, on September 11 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
De La Hoya has been away from the ring since 2008, when he was battered and stopped by Manny Pacquiao.
However, last week De la Hoya withdrew from the fight after testing positive for COVID. He posted a video from his hospital bed, to further detail his withdrawal from the contest.
He was observed for three days and left the medical facility earlier today.
De La Hoya seems to indicate that he’s still very interested in making a comeback.
“Hey guys, I am out of the hospital,” De La Hoya said on Instagram. “I was in there for 3 days. COVID hit me really hard. I was in the best shape of my life and I really can’t wait to get back in the ring. Thank you very much for all your well wishes and all your support. I appreciate it.”
Within a day of his withdrawal, De La Hoya was quickly replaced by former undisputed heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield.
Because of Holyfield’s age, 58, the California State Athletic Commission refused to sanction the fight – with Triller moving the entire card to Hollywood, Florida.
