Usman targeting future boxing match with Canelo

Fighting

UFC welterweight world champion Kamaru Usman tells ESPN that he’s looking for a new challenge and is actively targeting a future bout against boxing’s pound-for-pound champion Canelo Alvarez. As Usman currently sits atop of UFC’s pound-for-pound list himself, he believes a boxing matchup between the two would make for something special.

“I think that’s something that [would be] the biggest ever in history. That’s what I’m looking to do. That’s something that scares me. That’s something that gets me up in the morning. That’s something that I might risk leaving my daughter for another 12 weeks for.”

Usman is currently scheduled to face Colby Covington this weekend while Canelo faces Caleb Plant in an undisputed super middleweight title fight, and with their respective wins Usman says he’ll approach Dana White about starting negotiations with Canelo.

The Nigerian fighter acknowledges Canelo is a master craftsman when it comes to boxing but believes his style could present Canelo with someone he’s not accustomed to seeing inside the ring, reasoning that it’s sometimes better to be different as it could potentially work in his favor. I presume most boxing fans would beg to differ, though. I guess we’ll just have to see if this gains any traction going forward.
