Rolando Romero has broken his silence on losing his December 5 fight against Gervonta “Tank” Davis, which will now see Isaac Cruz face Davis in the Showtime pay-per-view main event.
Romero, 26, did not address the numerous allegations of sexual assault that led Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions to pulling him from the event. A police report has reportedly been filed in at least one case, so that’s a legal matter and Romero probably won’t be addressing any of that publicly at this time.
“I’ll be honest with you, (losing the fight date) fucking sucks, but it’s OK, something better is gonna happen down the line. And I’m gonna get him down the line, you’ll see,” Romero told Fight Hub TV.
“I’m not gonna stop pressing on the gas pedal, I’m gonna get him. He’s gonna knock out ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in a round or so. Now I’m gonna get him, I’m gonna knock him out in a fuckin’ round.”
Romero said that Cruz (22-1-1, 15 KO) was always the original planned opponent for Davis’ next fight, but that Romero “activated the mandatory” to fight for Davis’ secondary WBA lightweight title, a situation that arose when the WBA vacated all interim titles. Romero had held the WBA’s interim lightweight title, and we’re talking about two titles that never needed to exist here.
Romero said he expects to fight Davis next spring, and that he will still be activating his mandatory and expects to knock Davis out.
