Castano Training Hard For Charlo Rematch, Waiting For Official Word

Boxing Scene

The WBO super welterweight world champion, Brian Carlos Castano, is already training hard for a planned unification rematch with IBF, WBA, WBC champion Jermell Charlo.

The two champions fought to a very competitive twelve round draw, in a Showtime televised main event on July 17 of this year in San Antonio, Texas.

Their rematch is being positioned to take place on February 26 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

“So far I have no [information] in particular and no written documents. They want to rush me to [have the fight] in February, but I did not receive anything official, they asked how it would it be for me to fight in February; they tried to test me [on what I would agree to], because they even talked about January. The point is that the date is also good for me, because I’m not doing everything they want,” Castano told Carlos Irusta of Ringside.

Castano, who has 17 wins with 2 draws and 12 wins inside the distance, has already started training in Buenos Aires, after a long vacation. After the fight against Charlo, Castano decided to travel with his wife, Carolina, to Puerto Rico.

“I first stayed a week at [advisor] Sebastian [Contursi’s] house and then we went to Puerto Rico for about ten days. When I returned, in mid-August, I rested for a month because my father [Carlos] began to tell me that I had to train, because surely Charlo was already doing it, but I really didn’t even want to go through the gym door. I finally started [training in the gym] about two and a half months ago. Until a month ago I did one shift [of training] and now, two shifts at a very good pace and good sparring,” Castano said.

“I was fat, I weighed 88,600 kilos [around 195-pounds] and that motivated me to go to the gym, to gradually lose weight. My dad would tell me “Look at your belly” and actually, he was right. Now I must be about 80 kilos [around 176-pounds], but I am working comfortably, without exhausting myself. I am going down [in weight] gradually and without problems.”
