Miguel Berchelt Wants 1-2 Fights Before Targeting a Big Name at 135

Boxing Scene

Former WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt is motivated for a fresh start in 2022.

Back in May, Berchelt lost his WBC strap when he was brutally knocked out by fellow Mexican boxer Oscar Valdez, who entered the ring as a solid underdog.

Berchelt has been struggling to make the 130-pound limit for several fights.

He plans to make his lightweight debut in the coming year – and there are numerous big name options in the weight division.

Among the names competing at 135 – Gervonta Davis, Devon Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, George Kambosos and Ryan Garcia.

“It is a division in which I’m going to arrive very motivated. I have something to beat the champions with,” said Berchelt to George Ebro.

“I am not going to fight any more at 130, I have already squeezed what I had to squeeze out of the division. I spent four years on the throne. Perhaps it was not the best time to face Oscar. I can no longer go backwards, at 135 there are many champions, there are good purses and I have to go there so the people turn back around to look at me again.”

Berchelt recently extended his promotional agreement with Top Rank. He is also guided by Zanfer Promotions in Mexico.

The Mexican puncher has been ringside for several high-profile fights at 135-pounds, scouting potential foes in the weight class.

During his recent meeting with Top Rank, several possible fights were discussed for the future.

“They were talking about Lomachenko, Haney, Kambosos. We went to their fights [during the last few months] and it is a division in which I will arrive very motivated. Berchelt’s name will make waves in that division, I want to have one or two fights and then go after the sharks,” Berchelt said.
