WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol has landed the opportunity that he wanted – a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Their fight will headline the first ever pay-per-view event being distributed by DAZN.

The bout takes place on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 7th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Canelo was in action back in November, when he knocked out Caleb Plant to unify the WBO, IBF, WBA, WBC super middleweight titles.

Bivol saw action in December, when he easily outboxed countryman Umar Salamov over twelve rounds of action.

Canelo will be taking his second fight at the light heavyweight limit – after moving up there in November 2019 to score a knockout over Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO title. Canelo would later vacate the belt and drop down to super middleweight.

Bivol, a very talented boxer, is confident in his ability to overcome the man that many regard as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

“I believe in my skills and when I come to the ring I believe in my victory. I’m looking forward to May 7, thank you. Me and my team wanted this fight and I’m glad this fight will be in the United States and one of the Mecca of boxing. This is also very exciting, and it means a lot to me,” Bivol said.

“This is very important for me especially because I’m fighting one of the best if not the best in the world right now, I want people to be able to see me and my skills, this is a big fight that can give me the ability to achieve my other goals and go on if I win this fight.”
