Junior featherweight prospect Jesus Arechiga remained unbeaten Friday night, knocking out Jose Valdes Bernal in the fourth round at the Gimnasio German Evers in his hometown of Mazatlan, Mexico.
Arechiga improves to 16-0 (12 knockouts) and has now stopped six of his last eight opponents.
From the opening bell, the bigger Arechiga was the more-effective fighter, outboxing and landing an array of combinations on the game Valdes.
In the fourth round, after Valdes threw a right cross to the head, Arechiga landed a well-timed left hook to the body, dropping Valdes to the canvas. Valdes remained on the canvas in pain as referee Efrain Ornelas waved the fight off.
Arechiga looks like a promising fighter from the state of Sinaloa, one of the hotbeds of boxing. In his previous fight on November 26, the 21-year-old dominated Jose Valdez Morales before ending matters in the fifth round.
Valdes, who resides in Mexico City, drops to 10-6-1 (4 KOs).
Another junior featherweight who resides in Mazatlan who fought on the Zapari Boxing Promotions card.
Ruben Vega defeated Bralton Munoz Davila (3-6, 1 KO) of Monterrey, Mexico by unanimous decision. No scores were announced.
Vega (20-1-1, 10 KOs) was coming off a split-decision loss in his previous fight against Victor de Jesus Albino on November 26. Up until the loss, the 22-year-old has stopped five of his previous six opponents.
Featherweight Rafael Rosas improved to 19-1-2 (11 KOs) by stopping Daniel Garcia (4-5, 2 KOs) of Guanajuato, Mexico in the second round.
Featherweight Amed Medina (6-0, 5 KOs), who is originally from Nicaragua and now resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Maywood, defeated Armando Zamora (1-3, 1 KO) by unanimous decision. No scores were announced.
