Hughie Fury vs. Michael Hunter is 50-50 Fight, Says Shalom

Boxing Scene

Promoter Ben Shalom of BOXXER is expecting fireworks when Hughie Fury and Michael Hunter meet in a WBA heavyweight title eliminator.

Shalom says the fight will take place on July 2 in Manchester. Both boxers are reportedly on board with the fight and the event should be announced officially in the near future.

Hughie Fury (26-3, 15 KOs) has picked up three wins in a row since losing a twelve round decision to former champion Alexander Povetkin in August of 2019.

Fury’s last bout was back in October, when he stopped Christian Hammer in five rounds.

Hunter (20-1-2, 14 KOs) fought in the UK back in 2018, when he picked up a shock stoppage win over Martin Bakole. Hunter’s sole career defeat came at cruiserweight, when he lost a decision to Oleksandr Usyk.

Hunter’s last fight was a controversial split draw with Jerry Forrest in December. A lot of observers felt Forrest had done enough to win, with Hunter taking a lot of punches in the fight.

Shalom expect Fury to have a breakout performance.

“That’s an unbelievable fight,” Shalom told Boxing Social. “It’s a 50-50 fight on paper and Fury is ready for that, he’s been waiting for it.

“He was meant to fight Robert Helenius, that was what was ordered but Helenius didn’t take it in the end. Michael Hunter is one of those fighters that we all know how good he is and he’s never really reached the heights that we thought he could. Looking forward to that one in early July, it’s a massive moment for Hughie.”
