BoxingScene Championship Stats, Records Update: June 2022

Boxing Scene

Super Middleweight: David Benavidez now holds an interim designation from the WBC, theoretically putting him in line for a crack at Saul Alvarez in the future.

Middleweight: Gennadiy Golovkin is once again partially unified in the division after a stoppage of Ryota Murata. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly is now the WBO interim titlist, positioned to assume their full crown if, as expected, Demetrius Andrade moves to super middleweight.

Jr. Middleweight: Already recognized here as the lineal king of the class, Jermell Charlo is undisputed after a knockout of Brian Castano. Sebastian Fundora earned an interim tag from the WBC

Welterweight: Eimantas Stanionis is now the WBA sub-titlist at welterweight. The WBA title consolidation scheme appears to be slowing down but theoretically this puts Stanionis in line for a shot at Errol Spence.

Jr. Welterweight: Josh Taylor was forced to abdicate the WBA crown for failing to make a fight with previous interim titlist Albert Puello. Puello and Ismael Barroso are the top two contenders in the current WBA rankings. Taylor remains the lineal king of the division.

Lightweight: Devin Haney traveled abroad and put on a masterful performance in nearly shutting out George Kambosos for the crown. Haney now has all the major primary titles in the division. Gervonta Davis holds the WBA’s sub-title in the class and could theoretically pursue what would amount to a mandatory. Haney is obligated to a rematch with Kambosos in the immediate future if Kambosos elects to enforce their rematch clause.

Featherweight: Since the winter update, Josh Warrington has regained a belt in the division while Mark Magsayo upset the longest reigning titlist in the class, Gary Russell Jr.

Bantamweight: Naoya Inoue and Nonito Donaire entered their rematch as the consensus top two fighters in the class. Inoue was already widely seen at number one and recognized by The Ring as champion. Any doubts as to his claim to the lineal throne were addressed in two brutal minutes. John Riel Casimero lost his WBO belt outside the ring and Paul Butler is now what stands between Inoue and a perfect belt set.

Jr. Bantamweight: Fernando Martinez shook up the status quo with a rousing title win over veteran Jerwin Ancajas. Jesse Rodriguez did the same when he defeated what might only be the first of the hardcore four, Carlos Cuadras for the WBC’s alternative title in the class. Rodriguez will next face former lineal king Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

Jr. Flyweight: The WBA title situation is resolved and their real champ is now their only champ. “Super” champion Hiroto Kyoguchi overcame point deductions and a trip on the road to stop WBA sub-titlist Esteban Bermudez. Kenshiro Teraji avenged his lone loss, turning a tenth round shocker in 2021 into a third round revenge in March. Felix Alvarado vacated the IBF crown to compete at flyweight.
