Garcia Embraces Bam Rodriguez Facing Julio Cesar Martinez or Sunny Edwards

Boxing Scene

Robert Garcia, the head trainer of WBC super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, would still like to see his charge drop down a division to face some of the biggest names in the 112-pound weight class.

Rodriguez, since practically moving up by two weight classes, has defeated two of the biggest names in his current division with a decision over Carlos Cuadras and a stoppage of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

There are still several high profile opportunities at 115-pounds – like fights with Juan Francisco Estrada, Kazuto Ioka, Javier Martinez and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez.

At 112, there are also some interested fights with current world champions Julio Cesar Martinez and Sunny Edwards.

Martinez is still obligated to make a mandatory defense against McWilliams Arroyo. Their fight has been canceled several times and is currently being rescheduled. Edwards has been very vocal that he’s ready and willing to accept the opportunity to face Rodriguez.

“I want him to come down to 112-pounds and challenge one of the champions,” Garcia told Boxing UK.

“I know there’s Rey Martinez as the first option, he’s Mexican and holds the WBC belt, but he’s had problems making weight and cancelling fights.

“I know there is a champion [Sunny Edwards], here in the UK, that holds one of the titles.  We are happy to come here [to the UK] and challenge him in his hometown.

“112-pounds is where Jesse belongs, and it would be great to come here to the UK and challenge for that title.  I am more than happy for him to take that challenge.”
