Stevenson Calls For ‘Round Robin’ With Haney and Davis In The Future

Boxing Scene

Shakur Stevenson believes he, Devin Haney, and Gervonta Davis are in a class of their own, and that a mouth-watering “round-robin” awaits them in the future.

The WBO, WBC 130-pound champion from Newark, New Jersey expressed his admiration for—and desire to fight—Haney, the undisputed 135-pound champion from Oakland, California, and “Tank” Davis, the hard hitting 135-pound attraction from Baltimore who previously held a title at 130.

The 25-year-old Stevenson, who is coming off a banner title unification win over Oscar Valdez in April, floated the idea of a round-robin tournament between the three, preferably several years in the future, when all the other competition has been taken care of.

“Me, Tank, and Dev are like three of the best fighters in the sport of boxing, and I think, like, a round robin with us would be the people’s dream,” Stevenson told Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast. “But at the end of the day we’re all Black young fighters. I’d like to see them win. I hope they like to see me win, too.

“At the end of the day it would be better for us to take care of all the other competition and then be like the last of the dying breeds.”

“I’ve got nothing but love for them dudes,” Stevenson added, “but I’d love to get in the ring with them.”

Haney, the youngest out of the group at 23, unified the lightweight division in June with a comprehensive points win over George Kambosos in Melbourne, Australia. Per the terms of the bout contract, a rematch is being set down for October 16, also in Australia.

The 27-year-old Davis, the biggest draw of the three, is coming off a sixth-round stoppage of Rolando Romero in May at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Stevenson is set to defend his titles against Robson Conceicao on Sept. 23 in Newark.
