Wilfredo Mendez Injures Knee, Upcoming Fight is Pushed Back

Boxing Scene

Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico – Former 105-pound world champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Wilfredo ‘Bimbito’ Méndez from Trujillo Alto, suffered a knee injury so his main fight next Saturday, August 20th in Trujillo Alto against Israel Vázquez, from Bayamón, has been postponed until further notice.

However, the event called ‘Sixt Boxing Nights’ will still take place on the Rubén Zayas field in Trujillo Alto and will showcase legendary rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico in professional boxing.

“Bimbito injured his knee and the doctor recommended rest for several weeks,” said event coordinator Yoel ‘Yowy’ González.

“Although we are sad that Bimbito and Israel will not fight, we were able to set down a war from start to finish between ‘Popeye’ Lebrón and the dangerous Mexican Carlos Fontes”.

Luis ‘Popeye’ Lebrón (18-4-1, 11 KOs) from San Juan will clash against Mexican Carlos ‘Divino’ Fontes (23-3-1, 19 KOs) in a fight scheduled for eight rounds at the maximum weight of 132 pounds.

Of Fontes’ three losses, two have come against the likes of former world champions Luis Nery of Mexico and Luis ‘Nica’ Concepcion of Panama in thrilling fights.

Rio Piedras native Lebrón, after beating undefeated Cuban Frank Díaz in Miami, has suffered two losses against rising prospects Christian Tapia and Henry Lebrón, both from Puerto Rico. Both Lebrón and Fontes will seek to return to the winning path in order to qualify among the best in their division.

In other exciting matches, Carlos Rosario (4-0, 2 KOs) from Vieques will face off against Ángel Velázquez (4-2, 3 KOs) from Cagueño in a duel scheduled for six rounds at 130 pounds. The undefeated Rosario will be making his first fight on Puerto Rican soil, while Velázquez, who already has previous victories over the undefeated José Castro and Christian Lebrón, will look to add to his resume his third victory over an undefeated rising prospect.
