Golovkin Smiles: Many Mexicans Love Me and Nobody in Kazakhstan Loves Canelo!

Boxing Scene

Gennadiy Golovkin is less than a month away from his grudge match with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

On September 17th, Golovkin will face Canelo for a third time at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

They initially fought to a controversial twelve round split draw in 2017. A year later, Canelo won a very close twelve round majority decision.

Both of those encounters took place in the middleweight division.

This time around, Golovkin will head up in weight to 168-pounds to challenge Canelo for the IBF, WBC, WBO, WBA super middleweight belts.

At 40-years-old, even Golovkin admits that he’s at the tail-end of his pro career.

Canelo, who is looking to bounce back from a decision loss to Dmitry Bivol in May, has promised to retire Golovkin from the sport.

Canelo made an attempt to capture the WBA light heavyweight crown, but he was outboxed over twelve rounds by Bivol.

Golovkin believes the Mexican star is simply feeling the pressure after suffering his first career defeat since 2013.

“Saul really is angry with Bivol, not with me, but he wants to blame me,” Golovkin told Ernest Amador. “I don’t care about what Canelo says or what he does, the truth is I can only tell you not to underestimate me and that without a doubt the issue of age is just a number, I’m taking this very seriously.

“I know about my legacy and what I will leave written in boxing It will remain for future generations, but without a doubt when the time comes, I will surely enjoy talking to my grandchildren, if I have them, about what I did and left as a legacy in the ring. Many Mexicans love me and nobody in Kazakhstan loves Canelo.”
