James Toney On Spence-Crawford: “Spence Is Good Fighter But He’s Gonna Get Knocked Out!”

Boxing Scene

Count James Toney amongst a long list of rabid boxing fans and media members that are salivating over the thought of a showdown between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford.

For the better part of the past five years, both fighters have reigned supreme as the welterweight division’s top dog. However, following his recent stoppage win over Yordenis Ugas, Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) turned his full attention to Crawford and his WBO crown, the lone title outside of his possession.

As both sides continue to hammer out a deal behind the scenes, Toney has decided to dispel the flippant nature in which Crawford’s 147-pound run is often treated. By and large, while Crawford’s skills are ostensible, his competition has been lackluster. Nevertheless, despite being constantly chastised during his welterweight title reign, Toney is of the belief that Crawford’s resume is as good, if not more impressive, than Spence’s.

“Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the world,” said Toney to FightHype.com. “He’s the best welterweight in the world. Look at his resume compared to Errol Spence.”

Crawford, in his most recent ring appearance, ushered Shawn Porter into retirement. The two officially tangoed on November 20th, in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Porter, to his credit, made life incredibly uncomfortable for the switch-hitting Crawford. Still, the pound-for-pound star would eventually end Porter’s night in the 10th round.

Known for his ability to outbox even the most skilled technical fighters in the ring, Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) has developed into a devastating puncher, stopping his last nine opponents. Having watched both Crawford and Spence up close and personal for nearly a decade, Toney admits that he reveres both fighters. However, not only is the newly inducted Hall of Famer backing Crawford to pick up the victory, he expects him to do so while leaving Spence motionless on the canvas.

“Errol Spence is a good fighter but he’s gonna get knocked out.”
