Baumgardner on Mayer: She Struggles to Make 130; Looked Like Dried-Up Raisin

Alycia Baumgardner thinks the unfortunate delay to her 130-pound unification fight will not exactly play in the favor of her opponent.

The women’s WBC 130-pound champion from Michigan will not be taking on WBO, IBF champion Mikaela Mayer in their unification bout as planned on the undercard of the Claressa Shields-Savannah Marshall undisputed middleweight championship at the O2 Arena in London, as the entire Sept. 10 card was scrapped out of respect to the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II. British sports ground to a halt in the wake of her death.

Once the Shields-Marshall card was officially cancelled, Baumgardner and Mayer took to Twitter to take snipes at each other. Baumgardner implied that Mayer has had issues trying to boil down to the 130-pound limit, writing “Your ass whoopin got postponed! Have fun making weight again [cry laughing emoji].”

In a recent interview, Baumgardner elaborated on her comment, saying the evidence of Mayer’s weight struggles was written all over her face during fight week.

“I love it,” Baumgardner told Boxing Social. “She (Mayer) struggles to make 130. You can see it in her face. You can see how frail she is. Fragile. Even when I grabbed her hand, like, this girl can barely even walk. Looks like a dried-up raisin to say the least. But that’s just how I feel. Good luck making 130 again and getting that ass whooped.”

On Twitter, Mayer fired back at  Baumgardner’s tweet, saying that the postponement of their fight would hurt the Michigan native from a financial perspective.

“Your payday got postponed! Have fun going back to being a broke b!tch,” Mayer wrote.

In response, Baumgardner shrugged her shoulders.

“This is typical from Mikaela,” Baumgardner said. “Like her type. Just typical. For her to be even counting my pockets just says how in tune she is with me … I’m getting paid, know that.”

Baumgardner said she was disappointed with the news of her fight’s postponement but that she is also ready to “make adjustments.”

“It is what it is,” Baumgardner said. “That’s all I can say. Things happen the way they’re intended to happen. I make adjustments as a fighter. Again, we keep moving forward and keep doing what we’ve been doing.

“This just means go back into the lab, train even harder than I have been training, and make sure Mikaela really gets this beatdown that I intended for her to get [on fight] night.”
