Adrien Broner on Conor Benn, Positive Drug Test: ‘I Would’ve F—– Buddy Up’

Boxing Scene

Adrien Broner wasn’t too pleased when he heard that Conor Benn tested for a banned substance.

The brash multi-weight champion from Cincinnati was often invoked as a possible option for Benn, the rising welterweight whose fight with Chris Eubank Jr., at a 157-pound catchweight, was axed earlier this month after it was revealed that Benn, 26, tested positive for clomifene, a fertility drug that boosts testosterone levels in men. The revelations have cast a dark cloud over a fighter tabbed by many as the next star to emerge from the British boxing firmament.

Prior to the scheduling Eubank Jr. fight, Benn was eager to face a former welterweight champion, and he named Broner, as well as Yordenis Ugas and Keith Thurman, as attractive options. Of course, those fights were always long shots because all three fighters are aligned with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champion, a rival of Matchroom, Benn’s promoter.

“Yeah, he (Benn) trying to hit me with electric—not electrolytes,” Broner said on Instagram Live. “He tryna hit me with that electric, f——- electric … I’d f— buddy up.

“I would’ve f—– buddy up. Quit playing. I’d still beat his ass. F— that ban. You banned from over there (the UK), not the US.” [Benn has not been banned in the U.K. His case is currently being investigated by the BBBofC.]

“That Conor Benn sh!t crazy,” Broner added. “He done f— up a bag.”

Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom, has claimed that he made multiple offers to Broner but that they were all rejected.

Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) has maintained his innocence repeatedly on social media.

Broner, 33, has not fought since last February, a mildly controversial decision over Jovanie Santiago. He was supposed to take on Omar Figueroa in a junior welterweight bout, in August, but he pulled out of the fight citing mental health issues.

Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) recently called out mixed-martial-arts star Nate Diaz of the UFC to a boxing match.
