Boxing Scene

Memorial Hall, Kansas City, Kansas – In the main event of Triller’s “Sons of Legends” card, heavyweight Robert Simms (12-3-1, 3 KOs), 38-years-old, pulled off an upset when he outboxed Kenzie Morrison (20-1-2, 18 KOs), son of former heavyweight champion Tommy “The Duke” Morrison, to secure an eight round unanimous decision.

Simms was able to take Morrison’s best shots and boxed behind a good jab to keep the big puncher at bay and frustrated. Morrison was unable to make the right adjustments to deal with the tricky style of Simms.

All three judges saw it 78-74. The victory gave Simms the WBC’s United States title.

In his last fight, back in March, Simms went to a three round technical draw with Moses Johnson – who also saw action on Saturday with a stunner over Elvis Garcia on ShoBox.

Morrison saw action in April, when he stopped another former champion’s son, Hasim Rahman Jr, in five rounds.

Also on the card, super welterweight Steve Cunningham Jr. – son of former cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham – blew away Andre Scott in the opening moments of the first round.

Featherweight Jose Luis Castillo Jr. (25-3, 19 KOs) – son of former lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo – crushed James Roach (6-6, 5 KOs) in the first round.

Welterweight Jake Robinson (6-2-1, 3 KOs) overcame near disaster in the final round, to win a six round unanimous decision over Roberto Duran Jr. (9-3, 7 KOs) – the son of boxing legend Roberto Duran. The scores were 59-55, 59-55, and 60-54.

Light heavyweight Yavontae Christopher (3-0, 2 KOs) continued his unbeaten run with a four round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Gerald McClellan Jr. (2-1, 1 KO) – son of former champion Gerald McClellan. The scores were 40-36, 39-37 and 40-36.
