Keyshawn Davis: “I’m Ready To Step It Up A Level And Go For The World Title”

Boxing Scene

At the age of 34 and with nearly two decades of experience under his belt, Juan Carlos Burgos has reached a point in his career where he’s recognized as a seasoned vet. Still, even with a plethora of experience at the highest level, Keyshawn Davis viewed a win over the Mexican product as a necessity on his way up the lightweight ranks.

Officially, the two would square off on December 10th, in New York’s Madison Square Garden with the vacant WBO intercontinental title on the line. Although Burgos has pushed some of the division’s biggest stars to the brink, Davis toyed with his man, effortlessly winning every round while cruising to a unanimous decision victory.

As the former Olympic silver medalist reflects on his dominant performance, he believes that he’s earned a shot against someone ranked in the top five of the lightweight division.

“Yea, hell yea man,” said Davis to AB Boxing News when asked if he wants a top five opponent next. “I’m definitely ready. I dominated an experienced opponent every single round.”

Davis though, despite his ambitions, has quite a bit of work to do before he faces one of the division’s upper echelon. Currently, with only seven, albeit impressive, victories under his belt, Davis isn’t ranked in the top 15 in any of the four major sanctioning bodies.

In all likelihood, Devin Haney, the division’s lone undisputed champion, will take on former three-division champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko. Should the 24-year-old take care of business on the night, he’ll decide to either move up in weight or take on the next available highly-ranked challenger.

Regardless of Haney’s final decision, Davis is keeping a watchful eye on his every move. While he believes that the next step in his development is critical, as things presently stand, he would welcome a showdown against Haney.

“I’m ready to step it up a level. I definitely wanna step up and go for the world title.”
