‘Tank won’t rematch me because I’m moving up’: Ryan Garcia on going to 147, catchweight idea

Fighting

Ryan Garcia’s win over Devin Haney on Saturday night has people talking about a rematch with Haney, but also some about a rematch with Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who knocked Garcia out last year.

Garcia (25-1, 21 KO) says he doesn’t expect it to happen, saying that he’s not even going to try fighting at 140 again, and will be moving up to welterweight officially.

Davis fights at lightweight, and is slated to face Frank Martin — who is trained by Derrick James, Garcia’s current trainer — in June.

“I don’t think Tank’s gonna beat Frank Martin, but if he did, he wouldn’t fight me because I’m moving up,” Garcia said. “I’m not doing 140, I’m going 147. I can’t make fuckin’ 140. I’ve never even technically fought at 140. My body can’t literally go lower than 143, it’s impossible. I’ve tried every technique.”

“The only way he’s gonna fight Tank Davis is a catchweight, OK? 145, 144, just the way they did it to him. Now he’s the man, now he’s the face of boxing,” promoter Oscar De La Hoya added.
