‘This sport never ceases to amaze me’: Pros react to Garcia’s win over Haney

Fighting

Ryan Garcia’s win over Devin Haney on Saturday night has come as quite a surprise to many in and around the boxing world, which will happen when you come in a +550 underdog and all that.

Garcia (25-1, 21 KO) dropped Haney three times en route to a majority decision win in one of the strangest, most weirdly disjointed but at times thrilling fights you’ll ever see in a boxing ring.

The win gives Garcia, well, the win, but does not net him the WBC super lightweight title, which is now vacant. Garcia became ineligible to claim the title when he missed weight on Friday.

“Wow, this sport never ceases to amaze me,” promoter Eddie Hearn said after the fight. “Hats off to Ryan Garcia. Devin Haney, heart of a lion. What a fight.”

“Much respect to Ryan Garcia, I’m keeping my word and giving you your respect,” Shakur Stevenson said. “Now keep your word and let’s make it happen, my guy. Beautiful performance.”
