TMZ brings word that WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo was arrested last night and charged with multiple misdemeanors after allegedly crashing his Lamborghini into another car, fleeing police officers for nearly a mile, and registering a BAC higher than .15.
Charlo’s attorney tells TMZ that neither party in the original accident were injured.
Charlo (33-0, 22 KO) is boxing’s least-active titlist. His lone fight since defeating Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021 saw him negotiate a 163-pound catchweight with career welterweight Jose Benavidez Jr, miss weight by three pounds, somehow gain weight during the extra allotted time, then fail to finish his much smaller and visibly hobbled foe.
Despite this, Charlo has remained a hot commodity. Canelo Alvarez was willing to torpedo his PBC deal for the sake of fighting him and Caleb Plant has called him out nonstop since smacking him during a backstage confrontation. The WBC’s Mauricio Sulaiman shows no sign of stripping Charlo or ordering a fight with interim champion Carlos Adames, who is struggling to land a fight.
At this point, it seems as though Charlo leaving boxing would be the best outcome for all parties involved. We’ll see if anything comes of this.
