Lightweight contender William Zepeda will face Giovanni Cabrera in a July 6 DAZN main event from Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif., Golden Boy Promotions officially announced today.
The 27-year-old Zepeda (30-0, 26 KO) has emerged as a top force in the lightweight division, and the Mexican southpaw thrashed Maxi Hughes in his last outing on Mar. 16 in Las Vegas.
Cabrera (22-1, 7 KO) will be a huge underdog here, but he did give Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz a legitimately tough fight back in July 2023. He last fought on Mar. 30 in San Antonio, beating Ricardo Quiroz over 10 rounds.
The 29-year-old’s best wins have come over Rene Tellez Giron and Gabriel Flores Jr, both in 2022.
“I have but one goal and that is to become a world champion, and every fight gets me closer to that goal,” said Zepeda. “Cabrera’s only defeat is at the hands of a current world champion, and when two Mexican boxers enter the ring, fireworks can be expected. I hope we can give the fans a great show. Nothing will stop me from achieving my dreams of becoming the best in the world!”
July 6 will be a busy night in the boxing world, at least in terms of options. This fight will headline on DAZN, of course, and ESPN will have Shakur Stevenson facing Artem Harutyunyan for Stevenson’s WBC lightweight title. There’s also the recently rescheduled Nate Diaz vs Jorge Masvidal boxing bout on pay-per-view, which won’t really affect the audiences for Stevenson vs Harutyunan or Zepeda vs Cabrera, but it’s out there.
