Blair Cobbs beats Adrien Broner by decision

Blair “The Flair” Cobbs picked up the most noteworthy win of his career by beating Adrien Broner tonight in Florida, taking a 10-round unanimous decision victory.

Judges scored the fight 96-93, 96-93, and 97-91 for Cobbs, who put Broner on the canvas in the second round but otherwise never came close to finishing the fight early.

The 34-year-old Broner (35-5-1, 24 KO) looked lousy in this fight, which is pretty consistent with his other performances in recent years. He had no zip or pop on his punches, looked slow, looked like he’s completely lost any sense of timing as a counter-puncher, and like, frankly, he mostly just didn’t want to be there anymore.

Cobbs (17-1-1, 10 KO), while flawed, does want to be there, and that made the difference. He threw punches, he worked throughout the fight, and though he did fade in the second half and still doesn’t look anything like a serious welterweight contender, it’s a notable victory for him to take whatever remains from the name value of Broner, once — if briefly — a genuine top draw in the sport.

“He has a tough chin. Look at his neck, his neck is huge. He survived a lot of big blows after getting knocked down,” Cobbs said after the fight.
