The European Boxing Union (EBU) held its annual General Assembly last weekend in Tbilisi, Georgian Republic.
The EBU female title will now be called the Enza Jacoponi title to honor its General Secretary. Jacoponi began in her current position in 1990 and is worthy of representing the championship.
The EBU will keep its policy of not collaborating with any other of the boxing organizations in regards to other European titles that have in recent years started to spawn from the sanctioning bodies.
The annual award winners were announced.
Male Fighter of the Year: Britain’s Liam Davies, who held the junior featherweight title in 2023.
Enza Jacoponi Fighter of the Year: Spain’s Sheila Martinez and Poland’s Laura Grzyb.
Fight of the Year: Agit Kabayel TKO3 Agron Smakici for the EBU heavyweight strap.
Promoter of the Year: French EuroProm, headed by Gerard Teysseron.
Other EBU matters decided:
Current policy that prevents boxers from Russia and Belarus from being allowed to compete for any EBU titles due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict was upheld.
The Turkish Professional Boxing Commission is now a full member of the EBU.
The Lithuanian Boxing Federation is a new member, taking over from the “sleeping” Lithuanian Professional Boxing League.
The Albanian Boxing Union will remain a provisional member of the EBU, and it has until next year to reach a deal with the rival Albanian Boxing Federation.

Former amateur star Muslim Gadzhiamgomedov (3-0) will take aim at a world title in just his fourth professional fight, challenging WBA bridgerweight champion Zhaoxin Zhang (12-2-1) on July 12 in Serpukhov, Russia, according to rusboxing.ru.
The show is promoted by SOYUZ Promotions in collaboration with the very well-financed IBA (formerly known as AIBA).
In the co-feature, Irish junior lightweight Jono Carroll (24-2-1) and Albert Batyrgaziev (10-0) will meet for a WBA regional title.
The show will be staged at the IBA Coliseum Arena, is billed as “Night of the IBA Champions” and will be shown on Match TV.

EBU welterweight titleholder Jordy Weiss (32-0-1), of France, is without an official challenger now that David Avanesyan (30-4-1) accepted a fight against IBF titleholder Jaron Ennis on July 13 in Philadelphia.
The purse bids for Weiss-Avanesyan were set for Thursday but are now off course. Wiess will make a voluntary defense against an opponent to be announced.

IBF European cruiserweight titleholder Claudio Squeo (16-0), of Italy, will defend the title against German challenger Juergen Uldedaj (17-1) on July 19 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
