According to ESPN’s sources, talks for a long anticipated fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis have officially broken off. Both fighters had been in talks to finally put together a PPV fight that would be co-broadcast on ESPN and Prime Video targeted for November, but Lomachenko has reportedly decided against it and will instead sit out for the remainder of the year.
Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas offered these words on why Lomachenko declined to finalize the terms for a bout with Tank:
“Loma is not in the mood right now, he doesn’t have the motivation at the moment,” Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, told boxing reporter Steve Kim on Friday. “He’s taking off, he wants to spend more time with the family…With Loma, just money is not what motivates him.
“He doesn’t take anything just because of money. You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars — if he doesn’t have motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight.”
Lomachenko, 36, is most recently coming off an eleventh round stoppage of George Kambosos this past May, which got him back in the win column after a unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney last year.
Meanwhile Tank, 29, will now have to seek out alternative options for his next fight, after coming off a stoppage win over Frank Martin. Tank still holds a potential rematch with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in his back pocket, but he could also possibly engage Shakur Stevenson in negotiations after he just recently became a promotional free agent — but that would probably be the much less likely option of the two.
