Liam Cameron may not have gotten the marquee win he appeared to earn this past weekend, but he didn’t leave Riyadh empty-handed after securing a contract with Queensberry Promotions.
Though viewed by most as another stepping stone for Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker, Cameron (23-6-1, 10 KO) took it to his man from the opening bell, crowding Whittaker and holding his own in their exchanges. He appeared to have a head of steam as the fifth round drew to a close, only for he and Whittaker to tumble over the ropes and leave the latter with an apparent ankle injury.
The ensuing technical decision produced a split draw.
Cameron sports a number of defeats, but his record definitely seems worse on paper than in reality; he fought Lyndon Arthur to a split decision in June and the rest of his defeats were generally close on the cards. He’s not going to topple Anthony Yarde as Frank Warren’s specialist boy anytime soon, but there’s always a place for capable gatekeepers.
He’s also got a good story behind him, testing positive for cocaine in 2018 and subsequently spiraling before pulling himself together and reigniting his career in 2023. Nice to see things work out for him.
