Jorge Barrios vs. Jonathan Barros Set For February 20

Boxing Scene

Promotional company Arano Box has confirmed that former world champion Jorge Rodrigo Barrios (53-4-1, 36 KOs), 44-years-old, will fight on February 20 against another former champion, Mendoza’s Jonathan Barros, in a fight to be held at the stadium Villa Carlos Paz Arena.

Barros, 36 years-old and a former WBA champion, has a record of 42 wins ( 22 by knockout), 7 defeats and 1 draw.

This will be Barrios’ fourth fight , after serving four years in prison after being convicted of the wrongful death of Yamila González , which occurred on January 24, 2010 in Mar del Plata.

Barrios had car accident where he hit another vehicle that was parked - and the parked car struck Gonzalez, 20-years-old and six months pregnant. Barrios fled the scene, but turned himself in hours later. No traces of drugs or alcohol was found in his blood tests. Gonzalez died from her injuries.

In April 2012, he was sentenced to four years in prison for wrongful death. However, 22 days later, Barrios posted a 200,000 peso bond and left the Campana prison, where he had been housed.

Then in 2014 he was arrested again and sent back to prison. He regained his freedom in 2017.

“I forgave myself, because to continue you have to forgive yourself. I felt very guilty for what I put my children through, it felt like a a heavy load even though I love them madly. I did things publicly that made my children look bad. I ask for their forgiveness every day. I also asked God for forgiveness and he forgave me. I learned that if God sent Jesus to pay for our sins and I spent two years and three months in jail, I have no more sins. I’m clean,” Barrios said in one of his last public appearances in April of last year, when he gave an interview to media outlet A la Vera del Ring.

After serving out the sentence, the native of Tigre reappeared on December 14, 2018 , when he defeated Brazilian Adailton De Jesús by technical knockout in eight rounds. Then he won on points over Luis Esteban Stodulski on June 15, 2019, and then beat Diego Cháves (not the former champion) on the 28th of September in the same year.
