Marinez: I have to be cautious about Commey’s power but I’m ready for him

As Jackson Marinez gets ready for tomorrow evening’s ESPN lightweight main event, taking on former titleholder Richard Commey, Marinez isn’t sulking about his much debated loss to Rolando Romero last time out. Instead Marinez tells RingTV that he’s taken the loss as a test from which he’ll come back even stronger.

And looking towards Commey as an opponent, Marinez says he knows that he needs to be careful dealing with Commey’s punching power, but says that he’s been preparing himself for this outing and is ready to show the world what he’s capable of.

“I have to be cautious about his power,” said Mariñez, who will be fighting in the United States for the third consecutive time. “He’s solid. He is a great measuring stick. He’s an experienced fighter. I prepared well for this fight.”

With Marinez having some recent experience under the bright lights, he’s confident that he’s got the ability to contend on the world level, and thinks Commey is just the kind of fighter he needs to prove his mettle against. And Marinez’s confidence is only bolstered by the fact he’s been working with renowned trainer Robert Garcia. Marinez says he’s learned a lot over the past few months at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy, not to mention the benefit of world class sparring while he’s been there.

If iron sharpens iron, Marinez hopes to reap the dividends from investments made in the gym as he tries to climb his way towards world title contention.
