Berchelt-Valdez, Broner, more: Boxing TV schedule for Feb. 17-20, 2021

Fighting

SHO, 9:00 pm ET, Janelson Bocachica Figueroa vs Mark Reyes Jr, Vladimir Shishkin vs Sena Agbeko, Alejandro Guerrero vs Abraham Montoya, Timur Kerefov vs Argenis Espana. ShoBox is back with four fights scheduled, so get ready to lose at least one, as has unfortunately become tradition. It’s not anyone’s fault, really, eight fighters can be a lot to get through with no issues in These Uncertain Times. It’s a good ShoBox lineup, and I truly love this move to Wednesdays for the series. Come on by, Showtime subscribers, see some prospects in action and check in with the best commentary team in boxing today. BLH will have live coverage.

ESPN+, 2:00 pm ET, Sean McComb vs Gavin Gwynne. McComb has been a tall southpaw at 140, lengthy and awkward, and now he’s moving to 135 for this fight against Gywnne, with the vacant Commonwealth title at stake. McComb’s never made 135, for the record, so we’ll see if it’s a good idea or not. Gwynne is scrappy but has losses to Joe Cordina and James Tennyson, he has an obvious level cap, so this is more about what McComb can or can’t do against that level. BLH will have live coverage.

ESPN2, 5:00 pm ET, Berchelt-Valdez weigh-in.

DAZN, 2:00 pm ET, David Avanesyan vs Josh Kelly. A long overdue grudge match, now for Avanesyan’s European title. Kelly has been discussed a lot for a British prospect, with a flashy style some enjoy and others loathe, and a lot of questions about whether he can execute that against better fighters. Is Avanesyan “better” enough? Will his style be one Kelly can look good against? The show will also feature Robbie Davies Jr’s return, Florian Marku vs Rylan Charlton, and a rematch between Amy Timlin and Carly Skelly, who put on a terrific fight last October on the Usyk-Chisora card. BLH will have live coverage.

ESPN+, 6:45 pm ET, Berchelt vs Valdez undercards. “Middleweight contender” Esquiva Falcao will be in action, plus the likes of Elvis Rodriguez, Xander Zayas, Bryan Lua, and Sonny Conto. The normal Top Rank prospect parade, along with “middleweight contender” Esquiva Falcao facing Artur Akavov. BLH will have live coverage.

SHO, 9:00 pm ET, Adrien Broner vs Jovanie Santiago, Otto Wallin vs Dominic Breazeale, Robert Easter Jr vs Ryan Martin. We’re not going to lie and say this is some momentous return for Broner after 25 months out of the ring, or that it’s a Big Fight. It’s not. But Broner is a notable name, and he seems genuinely serious about getting his house back in order, career-wise. He’s still plenty young enough with more than enough name value to make some more good money in more big fights. But he has to win here, and honestly, it’s not just big names or top fighters Broner has struggled against over the years. Wallin-Breazeale is a good heavyweight scrap as the two fight for relevance and to keep a chance at a title shot alive. Easter is a former titlist at 135, and both he and Martin — who was badly beaten by Josh Taylor in the WBSS tournament in 2018 last basically anyone saw him — really need a win. BLH will have live coverage.

ESPN and ESPN+, 10:00 pm ET, Miguel Berchelt vs Oscar Valdez, Gabriel Flores Jr vs Jayson Velez. It seems this will be a simulcast between ESPN and ESPN+, or at least the Spanish language broadcast will be available on ESPN+, too. But the ESPN site schedule for this was a mess when putting this post together, so we’ll see. Definitely on ESPN, though. Berchelt-Valdez, of course, has potential to be an absolute war, and is my No. 1 most anticipated fight for the month. Valdez has tried to box more, but Berchelt is not going to go out there and see who has the better jab for half an hour, either. At some point, this is going to pop off. Flores-Velez is a good test for Flores, Velez is a fine gatekeeper. BLH will have live coverage.
