Caleb Plant: I’ll Unify All Four Titles at 168 – NOT Canelo!

Boxing Scene

Caleb Plant has guaranteed that for the first time in history there will be a fighter who unifies all four titles in the super middleweight division – but he promises everyone that Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will not be the one to do it.

After three defenses of the IBF world title, Plant will not return to the ring until after Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders collide on May 8th in their WBO, WBA, WBC unification fight.

Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) outboxed Caleb Truax over twelve rounds back in January and hopes to face Canelo in September.

“First (Canelo) has to beat Billy Joe Saunders in May. If he can get past him and get the belt, hopefully we can fight in September and give the fans what they want,” said Plant to ESPN Deportes.

“It would be a historic night that will leave us as the first undisputed champion in the history of the super middleweights and do you know who it will be? Caleb Plant.”

Plant views the battle between Canelo and Saunders as an interesting contest. He backs Canelo as a slight favorite to get the victory and unify the belts.

On the other hand, he pointed out the limitations that Avni Yildirim had against Canelo on February 27, leaving much to be desired in the bout.

“Canelo stepped into the ring and did what he had to do, had a successful night and imposed his strategy. I think his opponent did not give everything in the ring, he did not take anything away from Canelo… when you remain on your seat in the third round, that is not giving 100 percent.

“At this level, if you want to become a unified champion, make history and get into the history books, you have to go out there and give it your all. I felt that he gave Canelo too much respect, maybe he was nervous, but in any case Canelo did his job and now we have to see what’s next.”
