Josh Taylor: Teofimo Lopez is NOT Undisputed, He Must Fight Haney!

Boxing Scene

Josh Taylor is a month away from his highly anticipated full division unification with Jose Ramirez.

The two boxers will collide in Las Vegas on May 22, with the IBF, WBC, WBO, WBA junior welterweight titles at stake.

Unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez has discussed the possibility of facing the winner of Taylor vs. Ramirez in the near future.

Last year, Lopez catapulted his stature in the sport with an upset twelve round unanimous decision over Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Taylor does not view Lopez as the undisputed champion at lightweight.

Lopez currently holds the IBF, WBO, WBA belts – and the WBC “Franchise” title.

At the weight, Devon Haney is the WBC’s normal champion.

There are many fans who view the Franchise belt as a secondary title on the level of the WBA’s “regular” championship.

Lopez will return on June 5 in a mandatory defense against George Kambosos.

Before he starts calling out the top names at 140-pounds, Taylor has advised Lopez to settle his “unfinished business” at 135-pounds by fighting Haney for the final piece of the world title puzzle.

“He’s saying he’s undisputed champion and he’s not – he’s still got the other belt to win. He’s got to beat Devin Haney to win the other belt, so he’s got unfinished business at lightweight to do,” Taylor told Talk Sport.

“Do I think he’s a very good fighter? Absolutely. I think he’s an outstanding fighter, I think he’s a great fighter. Did he do well to beat Lomachenko? Absolutely, I thought he did brilliant, but he did brilliant against a small lightweight.

“He’s a massive lightweight and Lomachenko’s a very small lightweight. But again, he’s got unfinished business to do, so I’m not thinking about him. I think he’s a good fighter, very well-rounded, good timing, good power, but I’m not interested in him at the minute.”
