Saunders: Half The Mexicans Don’t Like Canelo, I Hope They Support Me

Boxing Scene

Super middleweight champions Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders will collide tomorrow night in a unification showdown as part of the Cinco De Mayo celebration in the United States.

The WBC, WBA, WBO world titles will be at stake in the fight.

The World Boxing Council will present the Mestizo belt to the winner of the fight as a trophy, to commemorate Cinco De Mayo.

The igniting match, which will be broadcast on DAZN and presented by Matchroom Boxing, will take place at the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Canelo returns to the ring from demolishing mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim in three rounds at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, while Saunders comes to this fight after defeating veteran Martin Murray by unanimous decision over twelve rounds in December.

Earlier today, the official weigh-in took place. Canelo posted a weight of 167.4 pounds, while Saunders was 167.8 pounds.

Saunders is hoping that some members of the live crowd, expected to be at 70,000 fans, will support him against Canelo.

“I think I’ve been up against the crowds before; I’ve travelled as an amateur to the Olympics game at 18, there’s no bigger pressure on someone’s shoulders when they’re stepping in front of millions of people there,” Saunders said.

“There’s added pressure coming for both of us for this fight because both of us don’t want to go home the loser. At the end of the day, half the Mexican people like him, half don’t, so hopefully half that don’t like him will be supporting the Gypsy boy, we’ll get it rocking and rolling. This is for all the Gypsies back home, everyone in the UK, plus half the Mexicans, get behind me.”
