Ryan Garcia’s leave of absence appears to be wrapping up. News broke yesterday that “Kingry” was set to star in a Gina Rodriguez-directed sports drama that will begin shooting in “summer 2022,” and he revealed today that a fight announcement is “coming soon.”
Variety has a synopsis for the movie, which marks Rodriguez’s filmmaking debut after a successful run behind The CW’s “Jane the Virgin.”
Inspired by movies like “Rocky” and “Creed,” the sports drama mirrors Garcia’s own journey and follows a Mexican American boxer named Alex Guerrero (Garcia) whose struggles with mental health rival his toughest bouts in the ring. After a chance encounter with a world champion propels him into the spotlight, he must prove to himself and the world that he has what it takes to come out on top.
Over in the real world, Garcia (21-0, 18 KO) hasn’t seen action since dramatically stopping Luke Campbell with a body shot this past April. He was slated to defend his newly acquired interim title against Javier Fortuna, but ultimately withdrew due to mental health issues, leaving “El Abejon” to face JoJo Diaz for the belt on July 9th.
Anyone keen to take a shot in the dark as to who Garcia will face in his return.
