Two former lightweight titleholders will collide on December 11, with ESPN reporting that Vasiliy Lomachenko has agreed to terms with Richard Commey for a fight to be held at Madison Square Garden. The fight air on ESPN and follow college football’s Heisman Trophy presentation.
Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) last fought in June, thoroughly dominating Masayoshi Nakatani en route to a ninth round stoppage. It was really quite a spectacular performance from Lomachenko coming off his loss to Teofimo Lopez, who previously struggled with Nakatani. It’s no secret that Lomachenko has wanted a rematch with Lopez, but with Lopez being tied up in uncertain business for a mandatory title defense against George Kambosos, which has already been delay multiple times, Lomachenko is moving forward for the time being.
Commey (30-3, 27 KO) made his last appearance in February, knocking out Jackson Marinez, setting up this big opportunity here. Needless to say, this particular time slot should bring plenty of eyeballs and the winner will surely be in line to contend for a world title soon thereafter.
