The organizers of Unity Day L.A. today announced that Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will lead the inaugural Unity Walk at 10am on July 4 in Pomona, California.
Unity Day LA will include celebrity boxing exhibitions, musicians Aaron Carter vs Chico De Barge and comedy duo J. Valentino vs Concrete. In addition, Adamyk – a former Golden Gloves medal-winning amateur boxer – will dust off his gloves for a match against actor Darris Love.
Boxing commentators will include Shawn Porter, Victor Ortiz and Kaliesha West, and the event will be hosted by Comedians Paul Rodriguez & Tommy Davidson. Boxing legends, including the Mosley Family, Mayweather Family and more will be in attendance.
A lifetime achievement award will be presented to Jack Mosley, two-time trainer of the year, and there will also be pro and amateur boxing matches.
Sean Garcia, the younger brother of top-rated Ryan Garcia, will participate in a match against veteran fighter Israel Mercado. Ryan will be on hand to cheer on his little bro.
Two former world champions will match up in the main event, as DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley takes on Devon “The Great” Alexander.
In a special match, Tim Ugarte of the Pomona Police Department will take on Remin Pineda of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department to top off the event.
Performances by musical artists Kumbia Kings, Ray J, Jacquees, Lakeside, Chico De Barge, Aaron Carter, TGM formerly Gap Band, Mali Music, B Howard, Wylde Bunch and more will keep the night alive with their vivacious beats and rhythms.
The half-mile walk for racial unity and community reconciliation will precede the unveiling of a monumental statue of Harriet Tubman (created by the famous African American sculptor Manuelita Brown) at 10:00 a.m. at Lincoln Park in Pomona. The walk will include all ethnicities, police and the community walking together under the theme “There is a time to protest – There is a time to Unite.”
Police and politicians from all around Los Angeles will take part in the effort, walking hand in hand in a display of community unity. Following the Walk, at the L.A. County Fairgrounds, will be the first annual Unity Day LA Celebration. Live music and celebrity boxing will highlight Unity Day LA, and it is the vision of Ray Adamyk, Founder and CEO of Pomona-based Spectra Company, to raise funds for the restoration of the Salem Chapel & Museum and the last stop on the Underground Railroad site in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Tubman worshipped at the Chapel in the 1850s, which had been built with the help of Freedom Seekers and is one of the oldest black churches in Canada.
The dedication of the Harriet Tubman statue at Lincoln Park is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., along with remarks from Adamyk, Dr. Alveda King, Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval and Elizabeth Zamora, CEO of Bright Prospects. The park is located at 400 Lincoln Blvd. in Pomona, and anyone who wishes to attend the unveiling and participate in the Unity Walk is welcome.
Following the unveiling, Unity Day LA is scheduled to begin at LA County Fairgrounds at approximately 2:30 p.m., concluding with the annual Kaboom Fireworks Spectacular starting around 9:15 p.m. Tickets are available at UnityDayLA.com.
