Devin Haney Favors Ryan Garcia Over Gervonta Davis

Boxing Scene

With both Ryan Garcia and Gervonta “Tank” Davis continuing their curse-filled war of words, the two appear anxious to settle their long-standing rivalry in the ring.

Once the loquacious budding star disposed of Javier Fortuna via sixth-round stoppage during their July showdown, Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) looked directly into the lens of the camera before calling Davis out. Unamused by his persistent need to challenge him in the public eye, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) has met Garcia’s ambitious callouts with his own verbal threats.

As the two attempt to hammer out a deal behind the scenes, Devin Haney maintains that a lucrative bout between them is unlikely to take place next.

“I don’t think either one of them are going to fight each other,” said Haney to a group of reporters. “I would be surprised if it happens. I mean, it’s boxing, anything can happen but I would be surprised.”

Davis, 27, recently zipped shut the mouth of Rolando “Rolly” Romero, scoring a sixth-round stoppage win on May 28th, in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Although he has his doubts, Haney decides that he’ll play the what-if game.

For the 23-year-old undisputed lightweight champion, he contemplates and wonders how a possible showdown between both Garcia and Davis would play out. After giving it much thought, the Las Vegas, native has tallied up the strengths and weaknesses of the pair before giving his final assessment. While he ultimately has a slight idea as to who would walk away victorious, Haney, more than anything, would simply love to watch both men battle it out in the center of the ring.

“I don’t know. Right now, I’m favoring Ryan Garcia but Tank obviously has that one-punch knockout power. But Ryan does too. Ryan’s much bigger, Ryan’s faster but Tank got way more experience than him. I think that’s a good ass fight.”
