Malik Scott: Andy Ruiz is Not a Tough Fight For a ‘Disciplined’ Deontay Wilder

Boxing Scene

Malik Scott, the head trainer for former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, does not believe there is anyone at the weight that can beat the new and improved version of his fighter.

Wilder returned to the ring last month, with a vicious one-punch knockout of Robert Helenius in the first round.

It was Wilder’s first bout since suffering a knockout loss to current WBC world champion Tyson Fury back in October of last year. Wilder dropped Fury twice in the bout, but saw himself get decked three times before the contest was waved off in the eleventh round.

There are several options for Wilder’s next fight.

The most likely of the bunch is former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz. The WBC had recently ordered Wilder and Ruiz to collide in a final eliminator, with the winner getting a title crack at Fury.

Scott has no doubt that Wilder will topple fighters like Ruiz, Anthony Joshua and even unified champion Oleksandr Usyk.

“His test is the Tyson Fury’s of the game. I don’t believe the likes of Joshua, Usyk and Andy Ruiz – I don’t think they come close to Deontay when he’s focused and on point, I just don’t. Believe it or not, with this Deontay, I don’t think even Tyson Fury can beat him,” Scott told BT Sport.

“A Deontay that’s disciplined and a Deontay’s on a game plan [against Ruiz], with all due respect that’s not a tough fight for Deontay at all and that’s saying a lot because Andy Ruiz is tough.”

Fury fought Wilder three times in the United States. The British star recently made it clear that he was open to a fourth encounter, but only if it took place in the UK.

“That’d be amazing here. I’ve been over there three times, if he wants the fourth fight, he’s gotta come to England. Do that at Wembley, break all records again,” Fury said.
